Primary Drainage

Primary Drainage is used to remove excess water from an area in your garden or on a sports field surface. It is going to require the use of perforated land drainage pipes, more commonly called Wavin Coil. These pipes are installed underneath the surface of your garden or playing field and they carry the water to a nearby ditch. It is important not to over-size these land drainage pipes because bigger is not necessarily better! The reason for this, is that very small soil particles pass through the slots in the drainage pipe and are flushed out by the flow of water.

The bigger the pipes the slower the flow of water. If the flow is too slow, the fine particles build up in the pipe and quickly reduce its effectiveness.
Correct pipe sizing is very important. When we design your system we will take a number of variables into account in deciding the appropriate drainage pipe sizes for your particular installation.
Substantial sums of money can be saved by getting things right at this stage.
Spacing of the lateral drains will be determined most likely by the budget. For example, on a premier league pitch 3-5 meter spacing is likely, where as 7 or 10 metre spacing is more common in other sports fields and hotel lawns. 10 meter spacing should be considered the maximum where secondary drainage will not be carried out, however if secondary drainage is going to be used spacing between lateral drains can be extended.
